And you know it is a...This is beautiful, Catherine. And you know it is a subject very near and dear to my heart.

Playing a sort of Devil's Advocate, I have to say that one of our greatest problems with illiteracy is that people today DON'T CARE that they're illiterate. They're not interested in reading or writing--that feels too much like work when they can just YouTube a school subject they "have to know." Throwing tons of money at that problem will do nothing. School boards are corrupt, teachers are forced to teach to the test, and the whole public school system has been in decline since it began. It is designed to please the government to continue receiving government funds, and education seems to be the last thing anyone cares about.

This is not about us not having the funds or resources to educate. What this is really about is that there is a much deeper misunderstanding about the value of education, a misunderstanding of the value of thinking, and of effort. No one wants to do the work. They have been taught today that it should just come easily, or it's disregarded. In my classes at Flo Valley, I regularly showed the Denzel Washington movie, "The Great Debaters," to show my kids the hard-won struggle black Americans had just to be educated. These poor black students of the 1940s South were superior in education to any white middle-class student today, and probably to a lot of private school rich kids. Anyone would admit it. They were quoting Shakespeare, learning Latin, debating Thoreau. My college students, black or white, hadn't even heard of Thoreau. And they weren't interested in caring to learn. That was "old stuff," with no bling, nothing to excite them.

I wanted to cry out, "You will become slaves again! We all will!" And we are. To China, perhaps. Or Arabia. Someplace where the work ethic dominates and education is still seen as the key to everything. We'll see how it plays out for America, but I don't hold a lot of hope, for writers or for any Americans, if we keep on this road we're going.Julia Gordon-Bramerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15682792436253939395noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4491848373964079980.post-18739257425832507132011-09-26T00:45:03.467-05:002011-09-26T00:45:03.467-05:00This is great !
